Toilet clogging is a daily nuisance that we all face at some point. Plungers are usually our first go-to tool for a clogged toilet, but if you don’t have one at home, substances like vinegar and baking soda can be used to unclog your toilet.
What Can You Pour Down a Toilet to Unclog It?
Vinegar and Baking Soda
If your toilet is backing up, and the plunger doesn’t work or you don’t have one, there are a few common household products you can use.
Vinegar and baking soda are a great, natural solution to a clogged toilet. Additionally, they will also neutralize any smells or bacteria and will leave your toilet fresh and clean.
To unclog your toilet using baking soda and vinegar, first, pour a cup of baking soda into the bowl, and slowly pour the vinegar in second.
The vinegar reacts with the baking soda causing it to fizz, this is why slow pouring is essential, if you pour too quickly the concoction could spill over and make a mess of your bathroom floor.
Hot Water and Dish Soap
Hot water and dish soap is another convenient solution to a clogged toilet.
Boil a gallon of hot water on the stove, and while you are waiting for it to boil, pour the dish soap into the toilet bowl.
Dish soap works best when it has been left to sit in the bowl for a short while, so pouring it in while you wait for the water to be fully boiled is ideal.
Once the water has boiled, pour it (carefully) into the bowl and wait a few minutes. Flush your toilet and the blockage should be removed.
Household Bleach
Another way to unclog your clogged toilet is ordinary household bleach. This bleaching technique is similar to what we do with the dish soap method.
Pour 2 glasses of bleach into your toilet and after waiting 15 minutes, flush your toilet.
This method is effective for heavily clogged toilets.
How Do You Unclog a Toilet Quickly?
As we mentioned above, if your toilet is clogged and you cannot unclog it, there are many methods to solve the problem. However, the fastest and most reliable among them is to use bleach.
The active chemicals in bleach, especially when combined with hot water, react instantly when they encounter the waste material that has caused the clogging.
What Liquid Can I Use to Unclog a Toilet?
You can use hot water with liquid soap, detergent, bleach, vinegar with baking soda, and enzyme waste removal products to unclog your toilet.
All of these products are effective and you will see results, even if you have a particularly troublesome clog and need to repeat the method once or twice.
Will a Toilet Eventually Unclog itself?
Occasionally a clog will remove itself after a few flushes. This is the case for relatively small clogs, whereby waste products are slightly jammed in the pipes and the force of continuous flushing is enough to push them on their way.
However, this is not an ideal solution. Continuously flushing your toilet when it is clogged can break your toilet and often leads to flooding.
Why Won’t My Toilet Unclog with a Plunger?
In some cases, the block may be beyond the reach of the plunger, or it may be necessary to dissolve the blocked material with some liquid chemicals before the plunger can move it.
You may also be using the wrong kind of plunger! Different plungers are required for different surfaces.
A cup plunger is used for flat surfaces and a flange plunger is designed for curved surfaces. If you are using the former on your toilet, the plunger will not achieve the suction required to remove the clog.
Can Hot Water Unclog a Toilet?
Hot water is great for unclogging toilets – when it is used with other liquids such as bleach or dish soap.
Hot water alone is not an entirely effective solution for removing the clog from your toilet.
Can Bleach Unclog a Toilet?
Bleaches are in the class of alkaline abrasive substances, and the chemical components in them can dissolve many materials, but they can cause damage if they are overused or left to sit in the bowl too long.
Cleaning your toilet with bleach is probably one of the strongest methods, so long as you use this method sparingly.
Is it Bad to Let a Clogged Toilet Sit?
If you let a clogged toilet sit, you will probably have an overflow in your toilet.
The stuff that gets stuck in your clogged toilet will come together with other materials and create bigger blockages unless it is unclogged.
The water in the bowl will mount up and can flood your bathroom. If your wall insulation is not good, the water may spread to other rooms of the house.
How Do You Unclog a Deep Clog?
